Chapter Ten

I emerged in a darkened apartment, lavender-tinted light from the Scottish gloaming spilling in through the windows, and stood gathering my bearings.

It didn’t look much different.

It was a small dwelling, not frequently used but periodically visited. Furnishing was sparse and cheap. A second-hand chocolate-colored sofa was pushed against the wall. A coffee table strewn with spiral notebooks was in front of it. A small desk and matching shelf were against the opposite wall. Beside the shelf was the door to the bedroom. Beyond the living space there was a small galley kitchen. I sniffed and noted that the air was stale. I moved through the room and poked my head into the bedroom. The bed was neatly made and there was nothing on the nightstand or dresser that might indicate he’d been here recently.

I moved from the bedroom to the kitchen and found it in the same state; sink and counters were clean, and no food had been stocked.

I breathed a sigh of relief and stood in the middle of the floor. It seemed so long ago that I’d been here for the first time, sipping tea and taking comfort from a stranger who was the only person who could prove I wasn’t insane. It was an awful lot of trust to put in a person you didn’t know. I contemplated how well I really knew him now and wondered if I wasn’t making the same mistake all over again.

I woke in a windowless cell. It was clean and tiled and resembled a hospital more than a prison, which scared me much more than cinder blocks and iron bars would have. I knew who they were, but didn’t know what they wanted with me. I couldn’t speak to anyone. I demanded to be returned to the Council. I cursed them and their entire race for hours with no response. I don’t know if I wasn’t understood or if I was simply ignored. I wouldn’t let anyone near me and thanked my lucky stars that they hadn’t restrained me. I accepted food reluctantly. I was never let out of the cell.

After an undetermined amount of time had passed, Darren still had not come for me and I had begun to despair. What were they going to do with me? Would they run tests on me, drug me, bring in a translator and hypnotize me? What did the Possessors hope to gain by keeping me? Each prediction was worse than the last and I forced myself to stop before I drove myself mad.

It was around that time that a girl appeared at my door. She wore a nurse’s uniform but I hadn’t seen her before and was instantly wary. She seemed poised to run at the drop of a hat, and her eyes were cautious, continuously darting around. I stood up on top of my cot and backed into the wall.

I shook my head, hard, and refocused on the flat’s living room. I pulled open the desk drawer on a hunch.
